The insanely large entrance into this ice cave, the intimidating entrance welcomes you to this gnarly cave. The battle of ice and rock had resulted in ice debris and nasty rock flour everywhere. Shortly after arriving at this location, a big cracking boom and a chunky piece of ice falling abruptly signalled the end of our time at this glacier spot. Unsure how long this structure would last, I wanted to get a quick shot before we left. Ice caves are a composition treasure trove and literally all the visual elements of composition was unfolding right here -  leading lines, frames and subframe, color harmony and negative space. Just needed an human element for scale.

The floor of the cave presented a leading line to introduce an human element, the “pupil” of the cave opens to the outside world forming the subframe, offering a glimpse of the snowy landscape beyond, as if the glacier itself is gazing outward, the crystalline blue walls shimmer like a jewel filling in the frame, capturing and refracting the sunset in an ethereal blue. Getting the wide-angle low down created a bit of negative space filled by the blue skies above the clouds that adds a bit of simplicity. 

As @lor_nz_sm was quickly undoing the rappel anchors, I quickly set up my camera for this shot. For me, this was those few precious golden moments of harmony between ice, time, and light. A great day out in the Canadian Rockies with Lori and thanks for all the learnings!

The giant blue ray aurora is a rare and spectacular phenomenon that combines elements of both auroras and transient luminous events (TLEs), such as sprites or blue jets. It’s called the "giant blue ray" because of its strikingly intense blue and purple hues, which are quite different from the typical greens and reds seen in most auroras.

This type of aurora forms higher in the atmosphere, often linked to intense geomagnetic storms. The blue and purple colors are due to nitrogen molecules being excited by high-energy particles from space. The blue ray aurora often has an intense and focused beam-like appearance, extending vertically in the sky, sometimes resembling a pillar of light.

The phenomenon is still being studied, and it’s considered one of the most spectacular and mysterious forms of auroras, providing an exciting field for both aurora chasers and scientists. It’s also more likely to be seen during periods of heightened solar activity.

Last nite was an epic night of aurora chasing that took me across 12 breathtaking locations, covering 600 kilometers in just 12 hours. Armed with 3 cameras, I exhausted 4 batteries, filled up three 256GB cards and a 128GB card, all capturing the magic of the Northern Lights in some of the most iconic spots within Banff National Park. 

From the tranquil waters of Bow Lake and Herbert Lake, to the vibrant skies over Lake Louise, Morant’s Curve with its famous train, and Castle Junction, the adventure was non-stop. We witnessed stunning reflections at Vermilion Lakes, the lively auroras over Banff town, the serenity of Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake, before finishing the journey at Cascade Ponds and heading back to Calgary. The auroras put on a show for the ages, and some of the most vibrant and active motion seen, triggered by a massive G4 solar storm. A night for the books, with the auroras lighting up every turn of the adventure!

The auroras put on quite a display last nite. It was amazing to just walk out of your home and catch the show in the comfort of your own home. Previously I had shot some beautiful sunsets at this location and always wondered how the auroras would look. Well here is the answer, and what a show it was, after the anticipated CME’s didn’t arrive, day 3 was the charm. Anyone ready for round 4? A fisheye view of the show last nite roughly around midnight.

Late in the evening just a few minutes before the closure of the forest we were blessed with one of the best sighting of the #indiantiger. This backwater Kabini tigresses, was chilling out by the waterhole taking in the sunshine, until it propped up its ears and took this stance. A herd of elephants presumably wanting access to the water hole stood in front of us blocking our path forward. After a few tense moments, our safari driver was able to manoeuvre us to safety, while I made the best of the #120fps of the #sonya9iii combined with the fast #sony400mmf28. My first time using the A9iii and must say this is truly a game changer for action photography. Fun times with @mctilakraj @v2nair

Got a bit lucky with my seating on this flight back to Calgary. The auroras were lit for the entire flight and the only time  when cloud cover and light pollution wasn’t a big  factor while chasing.

I have always found ice caves to be great for compositions especially when shooting with ultra wide angle lenses. A few of them sometimes throws numerous variables such as subframes, textures and shapes, leading lines, negative spaces, contrast and highlight differences that one can use to create compelling photographs that aid storytelling. A big thanks to Bernice for patiently holding that pose as I was constantly adjusting the variables in my composition. Fun times exploring this beautiful hole in the glacier!!

Have you ever watched the nite sky from top of a mountain?

The clearest nite in most of Alberta, and it was a perfect nite for a summit. A beautiful view of spray lakes and its surrounding mountains ..Goat..Nestor..Shark..Smuts.. Buller. The wind was very kind this nite and the reflections were mesmerizing! A great nite out with @johnandersen8338 and @dylonwaldron. The only downside of this trip was seeing a little lonely lost and injured bear cub in the area 🥺 sighting was reported and hopefully the cub will survive to see adulthood!

Such a beautiful majestic creature in the Canadian Rockies. Lucky to come across this special rare white-phase black bear and was such a beautiful sight to take in. Bears love dandelions and this one spent a considerable time snacking on the yellow flowers along the roadside. I am glad I had my long lens and use it from a distance to get a bit up close intimate shots.
